people are surprised to learn that in a typical football game, there is only about 90 seconds of 'action', in that you hike the ball (whatever) and players run around like crazy for about 4-5 seconds until your average play is done, then they stand around, call the next play, blah blah blah...
about 90 seconds of actual running around...

Of course, your description not only defies common sense, but is also completely contradicted by the study cited above. An NFL game is in a 3 hour time slot, and the study says that about 15 min (ie, 8.3%)is the amount of game play in that time. Not the rather ridiculous number of 90 seconds that you cite. And 5 seconds is about how long a play takes when the teams are in last second mode trying to quickly throw a short pass to set up a field goal. Many plays of course take longer. Too bad you never actually watch football, and obviously hate the game to the extent that you distort facts to fit your own preconceptions to the point that your estimate differs from the study above by a factor of x10. Oooops, just a bit outside.
