No one who ran for president, not Harold Stassen, not Donald Trump, was less suited for the job than G. McCarthy. There's a reason why when his peers were dropping like flies, no one pointed a gun at him. Hubert Humphrey, more than LBJ or King, authored the civil rights revolution, chasing the Dixiecrats from the party in 1948 and getting Truman elected by a miracle. Humphrey transformed petty and resentful Minnesota into a human rights oasis. McCarthy had other fish to fry as an anachronistic Stevensonian in 1960. When Hubert was on the verge of winning in 1968 and therefore ending the war, McCarthy was apparently more impressed by Nixon. In 1975 when Powell considered installing plutocracy McCarthy and Buckley were co-plaintiffs winning the ruling that money talks. Had McCarthy been elected it is unclear whether he would have reported for work since his poetry was always more important. McCarthy was right rather than president, but lacked what it would take to be both, such as JFK, which was the ability to go one on one with a Nixon, rather than somewhat admire him. His failure to support Hubert and subsequent conspiracy with Buckley and Nixon's Court were the central causes of the collapse of the republic. He is our Gorbachev.
