Something left off this chart, is the increase in how many people are killed in these movies. Now it's common for deaths of dozens or more in non warfare scenes, which is something that wasn't common in the past.

Some of the best movies of the 40s (when it was 40%) were indeed violent, Out of the Past, Key Largo, The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon, etc., etc. But it was an isolated cymbal crash, not a steady drumbeat like the ubiquitous Nazi parade bands. Americans are not mind-controlled to love war and die for the ultimate cause, as were the Nazis, but rather to be professional killers. Lee Harvey Oswald couldn't shoot straight, but he is the central icon of this 90% era.
